Reports: An Introduction

WHAT IS A REPORT?



Reports are a type of document containing information organized in a narrative, graphic, or tabular form, prepared on ad-hoc, periodic, recurring, regular, or as required basis. Reports may refer to specific periods, events, occurrences, or subjects, and may be communicated or presented in oral or written form. Besides, report is to provide information.

Reports are usually commissioned or requested by a person or an organization in order to get information about something.
The writer of the report is asked to take charge of collecting, analyzing and interpreting information, and 'reporting back' their findings to the person or organization who requested the information.
Reports often have 3 main aims:
v  To give a straightforward, clearly structured account of an issue
v  To answer a question
v  To offer solutions to a problem or recommendations for action

There are many major differences between reports and essays. It is exemplified and compared against each other in the picture attached below. 
There are two main types of reports that we are to discuss about:

Informational Report

- A report prepared from the information gathered through an investigation.

Analytical Report 
-A report prepared after analyzing the investigated information.
